Clean Water

Unlike the developed nations of the world in many third world nations, Nigeria among them, there is no government attention to water quality. Except for the collection of rain water from wells, in Ugbokun, Nigeria before the bore hole was drilled by Stride Outreach World in 2011, there was no access to clean water.

The nearest stream is miles away. Although it is feces laden and also used for washing clothes, it is still used as a source of drinking water. This results in a high incidence of infant mortality.

A University of Benin teaching Hospital study in 2009, determined the high prevalence of Onchocerciasis in Ugbokun. Out of 2020 inhabits tested using skin snip method for parasites, it was discovered that 1674 (83%) were carrying Microfilaria worm and cassava fermentation, especially amongst their female population, as a result of using unsafe water for domestic use. This devastating parasite is known to cause uncontrollable itching and ‘leopard skin’.
