Ugbokun, Nigeria
Ugbokun is a small, remote village in Nigeria, Africa. Located in Ovia local government area in Edo State, Ugbokun is twenty two (22) miles from the ancient empire capital of Benin and two hundred and nineteen (219) miles South West of Abuja. The area is endowed with natural resources but these resources have been badly mishandled. In Ugbokun there are no schools, medical facilities and other infrastructures that are common place in the developed world.
Stride Outreach World was founded by Osazee Woghiren in 2011 when he acquired land in Ugbokun, Nigeria. The project began with Osazee Woghiren self funding a bore hole that was drilled to the aqua fir ensuring uncontaminated, clean, drinking water for the entire village. This was a happy day for all! In November 2012, the Osazee Woghiren Medical Clinic was dedication and became operational.
In this area of the world, there is a historical precedence for deforestation and general mistreatment or exploitation of natural resources by corporations who seize vast amounts of land in remote areas as economical sources of the natural resources necessary for the manufacture of their products. Unfortunately in the past there has been all too often, little or no thought for the well being of the land or the people of the area.
In order to provide a source of revenue to the people of Ugbokun, Osazee Woghiren had the idea to set up a saw mill for the village and bought a truck to deliver the lumber . On the land and in the community, Osazee Woghiren encourages the practice of ‘PermaCulture’ farming. This incorporates maintaining a harmonious balance between human beings and the natural environment by giving the current farmers the needed education and funding to avoid the current rapid deforestation in this area of the World. Like the situation with water, the Nigerian government is not involved in educating the people. At present there is no school in Ugbokun. Due to economic conditions in this remote village, children are made to farm with their parents instead of being educated. For a child born in Ugbokun there is only the very slightest chance of an opportunity for education. Children are often sent to the city to face their fate of child labor. Osazee Woghiren intends to begin the restoration of an old dilapidated school building on the Stride Outreach World property and establish a school for the children in the Ugbokun community. The intent over time is to grow the school to offer education right up to the pre-university level.
